So many of you have been calling, texting, and emailing to see how my folks weathered Hurricane Ike that I thought I'd give you a quick update...
The Good News: My mom has been in Colorado during all of this, and my dad flew down to Corpus Christi, TX to get my grandmother (Meme) out of harm's way. Dad and Meme have been in the Texas hill country since Tuesday and have been safe. Bart the sheltie is also here in CO (currently curled up on the bed with me). Again, all people and animals are safe.
The Bad News: Flooding was widespread in Galveston during Hurricane Ike. A family friend went by my folks' house today after the roads were passable, and he measured the water line on their garage at about 4 feet. Not good. Obviously they are upset and not looking forward to finding their home of 35 years (the home where I grew up) flooded. Reports so far are that no one is going to be allowed on the island until at least Tuesday afternoon, so it is now a waiting game.
It's a sad day for so many on the Gulf Coast. So many homes, businesses, animals, pictures, mementos were all lost during this category 2 hurricane. But personally I feel so lucky that my family and friends and their families are all safe. I've text messaged with numerous friends throughout Houston, Galveston, Corpus, and Beaumont and everyone is safe.
Homes and cars are flooded, but all of our memories of life on Galveston are still alive and well.
