I posted this quote card on our fridge (next to James' word BRIO and its definition) as a reminder each day of my One Little Word. I've also posted it at my scrap space, but as I mentioned with RELAX, I'm not usually stressed and in need of my word when I'm scrapping!
OK Lawren, so you picked a word. What does it mean to YOU?
Well, don't laugh too hard, but I have to quote a kid's show here...
Maybe 6 months ago, Rip and I were watching an episode of Blue's Clues called "Frustrated", which taught a cute little lesson about what to do when you get frustrated. Our green-striped friend Steve (the host of Blue's Clues) said that we should STOP, BREATHE, and THINK when we start feeling frustrated or angry. Pretty simple yet pretty deep for a cartoon show host.
We started using this mantra whenever Ripley would get wound up about something that was frustrating her, and it really did work. The next thing I knew, I was saying these four words when I'd find MYSELF getting ready to get fired up about something silly.
STOP, BREATHE, and THINK.
More than anything, the phrase would buy me some time to slow down, rather than speed up and fly off the handle like I am notorious for doing. The process of consciously breathing would sometimes erase the frustrated feeling entirely. Thanks Blue!
One of the things that RELAX (my One Little Word for 2007) was supposed to do for me was to allow me to not take things so seriously, to lighten up. I look at BREATHE as an important component toward that end. Taking time to BREATHE can force your body to slow down, relax, realize what you are doing and how you are reacting.
I've posted definitions and quotes over on my BREATHE page, but MY definition of BREATHE is:
Slow down; Take a minute to relax, reflect, think; The opposite of REACT.
So here I go, 8 days into the new year, breathing more and reacting less...I'll keep you posted.
